TCL Q550F Review: Budget QLED Fire TV With Dolby Vision and VRR

The 2024 TCL Q550F is a budget-focused 4K QLED Fire TV offered in sizes from 50 to 85 inches. Every size uses a native 60 Hz Direct LED display without local dimming and supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. VRR, ALLM, eARC, AirPlay 2 and Alexa add useful flexibility, but the series cannot display 4K at 120 Hz. Models 55 inches and larger offer Game Accelerator 120 only at a resolution below native 4K.

Bottom line

Tech Steve Takeaway

Editorial takeaway: The Q550F makes the most sense for shoppers who want an affordable, colorful 4K Fire TV with broad HDR compatibility and basic gaming features. It is a practical streaming and casual-gaming television, but buyers seeking impactful local-dimming HDR or native 4K/120 gaming should move up to a higher-tier model.

The TCL Q550F combines a 4K QLED LCD display with Amazon Fire TV, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, VRR and ALLM. All sizes have native 60 Hz panels without local dimming. Models 55 inches and larger add a reduced-resolution Game Accelerator 120 mode, while native 4K remains limited to 60 Hz.

Picture quality

The Q550F combines a 3840 x 2160 LCD panel with a Direct LED backlight and quantum-dot color technology. This gives the series wider color capabilities than a basic non-QLED television, but there is no local dimming on any size. The 50-inch model has a verified VA panel; panel type for the other sizes is not verified.

HDR performance

HDR compatibility includes Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. That is broad format support, but the absence of local dimming limits the television's control over bright highlights and dark areas. A verified peak-brightness figure is not available, so HDR format support should not be confused with guaranteed high-impact HDR performance.

Gaming performance

VRR and ALLM are included, with Auto Game Mode switching the television into its low-latency configuration when supported by the source. Native 4K input is limited to 60 Hz on every size. The 55-, 65-, 75- and 85-inch models can accept up to a 120 Hz gaming signal through Game Accelerator 120 only at a resolution below native 4K; it is not a 4K/120 mode. The 50-inch model has no verified Game Accelerator 120 support.

Motion handling

Every Q550F size uses a native 60 Hz panel. TCL's Motion Rate 240 with MEMC uses motion processing and frame insertion, but it does not turn the display into a native 240 Hz panel. Sports and games remain subject to the limitations of a physical 60 Hz display.

Sound quality

The Q550F has a two-channel speaker system with Dolby Atmos compatibility and DTS Virtual:X processing. The 50-, 55-, 65- and 75-inch models are listed at 20 watts, while the 85-inch model is listed at 30 watts. HDMI eARC allows connection to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver, and Bluetooth headphones can be paired for private listening.

Smart TV experience

Amazon Fire TV provides the streaming interface, while the included voice remote supports Alexa. Apple AirPlay 2 is available for compatible Apple devices, and the television includes Ethernet, Wi-Fi, USB and Bluetooth connectivity.

What we like

  • Quantum-dot color technology across every available size
  • Supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG
  • VRR and ALLM support casual console and PC gaming
  • Game Accelerator 120 is available below 4K on models 55 inches and larger
  • Fire TV, Alexa voice control and Apple AirPlay 2 are integrated
  • HDMI eARC and Bluetooth personal audio provide flexible sound options
  • 75- and 85-inch sizes include four HDMI inputs

What to consider

  • Native refresh rate is limited to 60 Hz on every size
  • Cannot accept a 4K signal at 120 Hz
  • Direct LED backlight has no local-dimming zones
  • The 50-inch model has no verified Game Accelerator 120 mode
  • Three HDMI inputs on the 50-, 55- and 65-inch sizes
  • Widely spaced feet require broad furniture, especially on larger models
  • Wall mount and mounting hardware are not included

Tech Steve verdict

The TCL Q550F is best suited to streaming viewers and casual gamers who want QLED color, Fire TV, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, VRR and ALLM without moving into a premium television tier. Its central tradeoffs are the native 60 Hz panel, lack of local dimming and inability to accept 4K at 120 Hz. The 50-inch model is the simplest option and lacks verified Game Accelerator 120 support. The 55- and 65-inch models provide the core feature set with three HDMI inputs, while the 75- and 85-inch versions add a fourth HDMI input. The 85-inch model also receives more powerful listed audio, but its 68.3-inch stand footprint requires especially wide furniture. Choose the Q550F for everyday television, streaming and 4K/60 gaming; choose a higher-tier local-dimming 120 Hz television for more demanding HDR movies or current-generation 4K/120 gaming.
