TCL QM7K Review: Bright QD-Mini LED Performance with Strong Gaming Features
The 2025 TCL QM7K is a premium QD-Mini LED Google TV built around a 4K 144 Hz CrystGlow HVA panel, full-array local dimming and broad HDR support. Tech Steve found the reviewed sample bright, detailed and especially impressive with movies, while TCL’s Halo Control system kept visible blooming under control in his demonstrations. Gaming support is strong, but only two HDMI inputs accept 4K at 144 Hz, and the advertised Game Accelerator 240/288 modes require reduced resolution. Steve also noticed some dirty-screen nonuniformity during a test, though he said it was not apparent during everyday viewing.

Picture quality
The QM7K combines quantum-dot color with a full-array Mini LED backlight and a high-contrast CrystGlow HVA panel. Steve praised its clear 4K reproduction, balanced movie image, bright whites and strong contrast. He also observed little visible haloing in the showcased high-contrast material and considered the viewing angles good from off-center seats. Upscaling improved progressively from 480p through 720p and 1080p, but older 480p sources did not approach the clarity of native 4K. His dirty-screen test revealed some darker areas and imperfect uniformity on the reviewed sample, although he did not see the issue during ordinary programs.
HDR performance
The QM7K supports Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision IQ, Dolby Vision Gaming, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. TCL claims peak HDR brightness of 2,600 nits for the 55-inch model and 3,000 nits for the 65-inch through 115-inch models. These are manufacturer peak claims rather than sustained-brightness figures. Steve found highlights, bright whites and contrast impressive, while his SDR test exceeded 1,900 nits on the reviewed sample under unspecified test conditions.
Gaming performance
Every QM7K size has a native 4K 144 Hz panel with VRR, ALLM and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro. HDMI inputs 1 and 2 accept 4K signals at up to 144 Hz, while HDMI inputs 3 and 4 top out at 4K 60 Hz. TCL’s Game Accelerator is a separate reduced-resolution mode: the 55-inch is marketed for up to 240 Hz and sizes 65 inches and larger for up to 288 Hz. It does not make the panel natively 240 or 288 Hz, and it does not support those rates at 4K. The 98-inch US signal table specifically documents 1080p at up to 240 Hz.
Motion handling
Steve found sports smooth in Standard mode and said the QM7K provides enough adjustment to manage motion smoothing and the soap-opera effect. Movie mode is the better starting point for films. TCL’s Motion Rate 480 designation refers to MEMC motion processing and frame insertion; the physical panel remains 144 Hz.
Sound quality
TCL equips the 55- through 98-inch models with an Audio by Bang & Olufsen 2.2 system rated at 60 watts across four speakers, including two woofer channels. The 115-inch model changes to an Onkyo 4.2.2 system rated at 100 watts across eight speakers, including up-firing channels and two woofers. Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, DTS Virtual:X and dialogue enhancement are supported. Available sound modes include Movie, Speech, Music, Games, Night, Sports and Custom/Beosonic.
Smart TV experience
Google TV provides app access, recommendations, voice control and Chromecast. Apple AirPlay 2 and Apple HomeKit compatibility are also included, along with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa support. The included voice remote is backlit, and an art-gallery mode can display visual content when the television is not being actively watched.
Calibration notes
For sports, Steve preferred Standard mode or another brighter general-purpose profile. Movie mode is the recommended starting point for films, especially if Standard mode produces excessive motion smoothing. Available SDR modes include Intelligent, Vivid, Standard, Sports, FILMMAKER MODE and Movie, though availability can vary by source. Reduce motion interpolation if faces and camera movement develop a soap-opera appearance.

The TCL QM7K is best suited to shoppers who prioritize a bright, high-contrast Mini LED image, broad HDR compatibility and 4K 144 Hz gaming. Its strongest advantages are effective local-light control, impressive movie reproduction, flexible Google TV features and a native 144 Hz panel across every size. The main tradeoffs are mild dirty-screen nonuniformity seen on the reviewed sample, only two HDMI inputs capable of 4K 144 Hz and reduced resolution for the advertised Game Accelerator modes. The 55-inch model is the compact choice but carries a lower manufacturer brightness and dimming-tier claim. The 65- through 85-inch versions combine the higher HDR claim with practical central stands. The 98- and 115-inch models deliver a theater-scale image but need very wide furniture when used with their included feet. The 115-inch is the specialty option for large installations, adding more powerful 4.2.2 audio while requiring substantial mounting support.
