TCL QM6K Review: Affordable Mini LED With Strong Gaming Features
The 2025 TCL QM6K is a value-focused QD-Mini LED Google TV with full-array local dimming, a native 144Hz panel and broad HDR support. Tech Steve found its picture neutral in Standard and Sports modes, motion generally clean, blooming well controlled and viewing angles better than expected for an HVA-based television. Screen uniformity was the clearest picture-quality weakness. Gamers get two HDMI inputs supporting 4K at 144Hz, VRR, ALLM and FreeSync Premium Pro, while the advertised Game Accelerator 240/288 modes require reduced resolution.

The QM6K is a strong choice for shoppers who want Mini LED contrast and serious 4K gaming features without moving into TCL's more expensive tiers. Picture quality
The QD-Mini LED backlight and HVA panel deliver strong contrast, while local dimming helps preserve dark backgrounds around bright highlights. Tech Steve found the default Sports presentation relatively neutral rather than excessively saturated, and Standard mode worked well for everyday viewing. Viewing angles held up better than he expected from an HVA-based display, although performance was not perfect from extreme positions. Reflections were handled reasonably well, but the coating did not appear as effective as TCL's higher-end treatment. The principal weakness observed was uneven screen uniformity during a dirty-screen-effect test.
HDR performance
The QM6K supports Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision IQ, Dolby Vision Gaming, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. Tech Steve felt Dolby Vision retained good brightness and highlighted the usefulness of brighter daytime and darker nighttime presentations. His informal Vivid-mode meter check displayed approximately 840 at its initial peak and approximately 696 after several seconds on a 10% window. These readings should be treated as a practical test of the reviewed television rather than a size-wide rated brightness specification.
Gaming performance
Every QM6K size has a physical 144Hz panel and can accept up to 4K at 144Hz through HDMI inputs 1 and 2. VRR, ALLM and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro provide a strong feature set for consoles and gaming PCs. HDMI inputs 3 and 4 are limited to 4K at 60Hz. Game Accelerator supports up to 240Hz on the 50- and 55-inch versions and up to 288Hz on the 65-inch and larger versions, but only at reduced resolution; it does not increase the native panel rate or enable 4K at those higher figures.
Motion handling
Motion appeared clean and smooth in Standard mode, with only minor fringing visible in part of the demonstration. Movie and Filmmaker Mode preserve a presentation closer to 24-frame-per-second film and can consequently look less fluid. Low, Medium and High motion presets are available, while Custom mode provides separate blur-reduction and judder-reduction controls. TCL's Motion Rate 480 designation includes motion processing and should not be confused with a native 480Hz panel.
Sound quality
The 55- through 98-inch models use an ONKYO 2.1-channel system with a built-in bass driver, Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X support. Tech Steve considered the internal audio good for standalone television use, but found that a separate system with a larger subwoofer and rear speakers created a much more immersive movie experience. The 50-inch version is different: it uses a 2.0-channel configuration without the rear subwoofer fitted to the larger sizes.
Smart TV experience
Google TV provides streaming apps, recommendations, Chromecast built-in and Apple AirPlay 2. Voice control is available through the remote or hands-free Google Assistant, with Amazon Alexa compatibility also listed. Tech Steve noted that the remote is backlit, making it easier to use in a dark room. The television supports Bluetooth audio, but the reviewed connection panel did not include a wired headphone jack.
Calibration notes
Standard mode was the most practical everyday choice in Tech Steve's viewing, while Vivid produced a brighter and more exaggerated image. Movie and Filmmaker Mode shifted the image warmer for film content. His color checker and saturation sweep found several points that could be improved, after which he made small basic adjustments rather than performing a complete calibration. Dolby Vision Bright is the practical daytime option, while a darker Dolby Vision presentation is better suited to nighttime viewing.

The TCL QM6K combines Mini LED local dimming, broad HDR compatibility and a native 144Hz panel at a value-oriented position. Its strongest qualities are controlled blooming, solid contrast, clean motion and two fully capable 4K/144Hz HDMI inputs. Its tradeoffs include visible uniformity variation, only two high-frame-rate HDMI inputs and Game Accelerator figures that require reduced resolution. The 50-inch model is the compact choice but loses the built-in subwoofer. The 55- through 75-inch models provide the core feature set and fuller 2.1-channel audio, while the 85- and 98-inch versions add an explicitly identified matte HVA screen that is useful in brighter large-screen rooms. Buy it for gaming and affordable Mini LED performance; consider adding a soundbar or surround system if movie audio is a priority.
