Sony BRAVIA 5 Review: Mini LED, 4K 120Hz and Google TV
The 2025 Sony BRAVIA 5 is a Mini LED 4K television built around Sony’s XR Processor, XR Backlight Master Drive and a native 120Hz panel. It delivers natural-looking color, strong processing, useful PlayStation 5 integration and a responsive Google TV experience. Its biggest tradeoffs are limited off-axis color on the reviewed 65-inch model, reflections in bright rooms, no HDR10+, and only two HDMI inputs supporting VRR and 4K120 gaming features.

Picture quality
Sony’s XR Processor with AI scene recognition combines with Mini LED local dimming, XR Triluminos Pro and XR Clear Image processing. On the reviewed 65-inch model, Tech Steve highlighted rich color, clear images and visible shadow detail. He also noticed that some game scenes produced blacks that looked more gray than fully black. Color faded somewhat when the screen was viewed from the side. Glare handling appeared respectable, but bright windows and direct light sources could still produce visible reflections.
HDR performance
The BRAVIA 5 supports HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision, including Dolby Vision Bright, Dark, Vivid and Game modes. PlayStation 5 integration includes Auto HDR Tone Mapping, and Tech Steve observed detailed skies and shadows while gaming in HDR. Sony does not publish numerical peak-HDR brightness or local-dimming-zone counts for the series. HDR10+ is not supported.
Gaming performance
Every BRAVIA 5 size has a native 120Hz panel and accepts 3840 x 2160 signals at up to 120Hz. HDMI 3 and HDMI 4 support VRR, while ALLM is available across the HDMI inputs. Tech Steve demonstrated 4K120 and VRR with PS5 and Xbox and described gameplay as smooth. The Game Menu provides quick access to picture mode, VRR, motion reduction, Black Equalizer, screen-size controls and crosshairs. PS5 owners also receive Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode. The television does not support 144Hz or 165Hz, and 1440p was not offered in the console tests. Because eARC shares one of the two high-bandwidth connections, soundbar users may have only one such input left for a game console.
Motion handling
The native 120Hz panel supports smooth 4K120 gameplay, and Tech Steve described motion during his PS5 demonstration as very smooth. Sony’s XR Motion Clarity coordinates motion processing with backlight control to improve moving-image clarity while limiting unnecessary brightness loss.
Sound quality
The Acoustic Multi-Audio system uses two full-range bass-reflex speakers and two sound-positioning tweeters, with 40 watts of total power. Tech Steve found the built-in sound notably good and said the side-positioned speakers helped create a more enveloping presentation. Voice Zoom 3 can raise or lower dialogue independently, while 3D Surround Upscaling simulates a 5.1.2-channel presentation. Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and DTS-HD formats are supported, but there is no dedicated subwoofer.
Smart TV experience
Google TV organizes streaming services, apps and live content in one interface. Tech Steve found navigation responsive and demonstrated profile support, a children’s mode, Google Photos ambient mode, Bluetooth audio and Google Cast. Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit are also supported. Setup can be completed with the remote or Google Home app, and the television can operate in a basic-TV mode without the complete Google TV experience.
Calibration notes
The BRAVIA 5 includes Professional, Cinema, IMAX Enhanced and service-specific Studio Calibrated modes for Netflix, Prime Video and Sony Pictures Core. Dolby Vision provides Vivid, Bright, Dark and Game options. The overview demonstrates the available controls but does not establish finalized calibration settings or measured brightness targets.

Movie and streaming shoppers benefit from Dolby Vision, Sony’s calibrated modes and broad DTS support, while PS5 owners receive the most complete console integration. Its compromises are important: off-axis color can fade, strong light sources remain visible on the screen, HDR10+ is absent, and only two HDMI ports handle VRR and 4K120 features. Buy the 55- through 85-inch models when you want flexible inside foot positions and an optional raised soundbar configuration. Choose the 98-inch model for maximum immersion only if your furniture or wall installation can accommodate its much wider stand and different chassis.
