AWOL Vision Aetherion Max Review: Huge, Sharp 4K Images with One Gaming Catch
The AWOL Vision Aetherion Max is a premium 4K RGB triple-laser ultra-short-throw projector built for large-screen movies, streaming and gaming. Tech Steve found its image natural, sharp and colorful, with convincing black levels, smooth motion and strong upscaling. Its broad HDR support, fast Google TV interface and extensive connectivity make it a versatile home-theater centerpiece. The key gaming limitation is that the projected image tops out at 4K/60Hz; 120Hz and 240Hz display modes require 1080p.

Picture quality
Tech Steve described the Aetherion Max as one of the sharpest projectors he has viewed on the channel. He found its colors natural and vivid, with good audience shadow detail during sports and dark letterbox bars that avoided an obvious gray haze. AWOL claims 110% Rec.2020 coverage and a 6,000:1 native contrast ratio. Black-level enhancement comes from a seven-level mechanical iris, Enhanced Black Level processing and internal stray-light control rather than a local-dimming zone system. AI Super Resolution is available for lower-resolution material, and Steve found that even 480p content was handled well before improving further at 720p and 1080p.
HDR performance
Format support is unusually complete, covering Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision Gaming, HDR10+, HDR10, HLG and IMAX Enhanced. Dynamic Tone Mapping can adjust HDR10 and HLG tone curves using Low or High processing settings to preserve shadow detail and reduce highlight clipping. AWOL claims up to 60,000:1 viewing contrast with Enhanced Black Level enabled, but this should not be treated as measured native contrast. Tech Steve demonstrated HDR gaming, theater, Filmmaker and IMAX options as well as Dolby Vision Bright, Dark and customizable presentations.
Gaming performance
The projector supports VRR, ALLM and low-latency operation. AWOL specifies 2ms at 4K/60Hz, 4ms at 1080p/120Hz and 1ms at 1080p/240Hz when the required low-latency settings are active. Tech Steve found console gaming responsive and recommended setting each HDMI input to automatic for easier signal detection. The important limitation is refresh rate: the highest verified displayed rate at 3840 x 2160 is 60Hz. Although a source may report or deliver a 4K/120Hz signal to the input, the projector displays it at no more than 60Hz. True 120Hz and 240Hz output requires 1920 x 1080 resolution.
Motion handling
Tech Steve reported smooth sports playback without visible ghosting or trailing. His 24fps and 60fps demonstrations also appeared clean, with the expected increase in smoothness at 60fps. The projector supports true 24fps and 48fps film playback, helping preserve cinematic cadence when compatible content is used.
Sound quality
The built-in audio system uses two 25W full-range drivers and two 20W high-frequency drivers for 90W of nominal output, with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support. AI Voice allows separate adjustment of dialogue and background-sound levels. HDMI 2 provides eARC for connection to an external receiver or soundbar, and the projector can work as a center channel with AWOL's optional ThunderBeat system. Bluetooth audio is less suitable when lip synchronization is important because AWOL cautions that it introduces substantial latency.
Features and connectivity
Google TV based on Android TV 14 provides integrated streaming, Google Assistant, Chromecast and access to the Google app ecosystem. Tech Steve found the interface fast and responsive, with no noticeable lag while moving through applications. Google Live offers free streaming channels without a television tuner. Wireless features include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Miracast, while smart-home compatibility extends to Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa and Control4.
Calibration notes
Tech Steve demonstrated SDR presets including Vivid, Standard, Sports, Energy Saving, PC Gaming, Theater and Filmmaker modes, noting only a slight visible difference between Theater and Filmmaker. HDR options shown included Vivid, Standard, Sports, Energy Saving, HDR Gaming, HDR Theater, Filmmaker and IMAX. Dolby Vision offered Bright, Dark and customizable options. A calibration mode is available for shoppers who want to tailor the image. Dynamic Tone Mapping provides Low and High settings for HDR10 and HLG. The Anti-RBE reduction feature is associated with the Warm 1 color-temperature setting.
Models and configurations
The Aetherion Max is one projector with an adjustable 80- to 200-inch image range, not separate size-specific models. The same 4K DLP hardware, 3,300 ISO-lumen manufacturer rating and maximum 4K/60Hz output apply throughout that range. Approximate lens-to-wall clearance is 6.2 inches for a 100-inch image, 14.3 inches for 150 inches and 22.3 inches for 200 inches. Furniture planning must also include the projector's 12.72-inch chassis depth, plus room for cables and ventilation; a 200-inch installation can therefore require roughly 35 inches before additional clearance. Larger images spread the available light over more screen area, so screen selection and room-light control become increasingly important. The projector uses a fixed 0.2:1 throw ratio and does not have television-style panels, dimming-zone counts, stands or size-dependent VESA patterns.

The Aetherion Max is aimed at shoppers who want a very large cinematic image without installing a conventional long-throw projector. Its strongest advantages are sharp 4K presentation, broad HDR compatibility, an RGB triple-laser engine, convincing motion, extensive source connectivity and a responsive Google TV platform. It also has more serious gaming features than a typical home-theater projector, including VRR, ALLM and documented low-latency modes. The main compromise is that 4K output stops at 60Hz; gamers seeking an actually displayed 120Hz or 240Hz image must use 1080p. Installation also requires careful furniture-depth calculations, especially at 150 or 200 inches. At its original $4,499 MSRP, it makes the most sense for home-theater enthusiasts who will use its large projection range, HDR formats and integrated smart features rather than shoppers simply seeking the least expensive route to a 100-inch image.
