You DON’T need that metal bracket. That’s ONLY if it’s connecting directly into an electrical box. You’re connecting onto a wall.
Do NOT do what he did and it’s dangerous if the wires strip and touch that metal. It’s low voltage, but do NOT do it. HVAC since 2002.
P.s. you also should get a 24v AC adapter and connect it like this: one part of the wire to C for common to power the thermostat 24/7 and not have to constantly turn on your furnace to draw in power and the other to RC.
Unbelievable. Technology was supposed to simplfy our lives not complicate it. This is garbage. WTF is all that selection ? My 25 year old thermostat is infinitely simple. The fucking software doesn't install on my iPhone 5, google wants me to buy a new phone I don't need to use this complicated garbage? Give me a break. ! They also ask my address, really?
Great video…very helpful for a non tech old fart like myself. One question though; I bought a used one and it was not charged. I wired it up as per instructions. Will this charge from the wiring or do I need to precharge it before installation? Thanks.
Thank you! This video was more informative than the Nest provided instructions. It turns out I had the same exact Honeywell thermostat that you did..not any more!
Thanks Steve for sharing this. My daughter gave me one of these for Christmas and I'll be installing it today. With this tutorial video, I'm sure everything will go flawlessly.
My apologies if I missed this but I saw when you turned the breakers off to remove the old thermostat and install the Nest but I did not see when you can turn the breakers back on. Was it after you mounted the display part of the Nest? Thank you for this great video. I am excited to use it when I install my new Nest!

Awesome
Where you find the key?
Take a good picture of how your current thermostat is wired and to where. It will help you reference which wire is what when labeling them.
Great video thank you
