Nah, just enable "Apps Only mode" by clicking your profile picture, manage accounts, select the account and scroll down to "Apps Only" mode and enable it. You give up voice search function, ability to install more apps that aren't already installed, and lose the custom Google Photos album, but the OS is WAYYYY less ads and snappier. Once you hit the down key to get past the one banner, it literally looks like an Apple TV with big tiles of app icons and ZERO ads. That's it.
It's good to know we don't have all those subscription ads popping up everywhere.
What about TV system updates? Don’t they have potential picture improvements?

Can you still set up the picture and sound? Also, if you want firmware updates, can you connect to the web without having to use the Google system?
Does all major brands have this Set up as basic TV feature in their menu ?
Furthermore what happens with a google TV when there is Wifi crash, will the TV work ???

If we have a smart tv like a TCL and have Directv.. can we go back and forth and use YouTube.. I saw how you easily added an app going off the cable box .. But do we have to go thru all those settings to get off YouTube to go back to Directv again on the cable box or is it an easy switch too?.. thanks!
Ughh! Yo this does not work with the Google dongle!!! That's my bad for relying on Google search and it bringing me here. For y'all with the plug in Google Dongle, if you don't have WiFi and factory reset trying to make this a TV you are going to be disappointed factory resetting
